On March 31 there will be a screening for Dawn Porter’s timely documentary “Trapped.” This documentary explores how targeted regulation of abortion providers (or TRAP laws) have detrimental effects on not only providers, but patients and communities as well. As a woman of child bearing age, I am disgusted with these laws and how inaccessible abortion is for women! It scares me on a personal level that I cannot control what I do to my body because a bunch of politicians think they know my body better than I do. When I hear stories about abortion before Roe v. Wade I think of how dangerous and hurtful it was for women to not have the legal right or bodily autonomy to choose. It seems like a concept from a different planet, the idea that one’s body is not their own. But this isn’t a different planet, this is all too real for us. Even today with abortion legal, women are still performing self abortions that are possibly very unsafe or seeking out help from places other than health centers for the simple fact that they can’t access one. So why are we going to continue to shut down health centers and further the problem? It’s ludicrous and we need to make serious changes to ensure women have the right to choose!
